Simultaneous Enrollment 

The Faculty believes that active engagement in a classroom setting is essential to learning. Therefore, students may not enroll in courses that meet at the same time or at overlapping times, except in two cases:

1. When one of the two courses has been granted a waiver from the Administrative Board petition process by a subcommittee of the Standing Committee on Undergraduate Educational Policy (EPC).

  • Computer Science 50, Introduction to Computer Science
  • Computer Science 61, Systems Programming and Machine Organization
  • Economics 10A, Principles of Economics (Microeconomics)    
  • Economics 1017, A Libertarian Perspective on Economic and Social Policy

Approved with the following stipulation:

Students may enroll simultaneously in another course only if they have a conflict that can be resolved by attending another section on the day/time of the conflict. Set attendance, either during one of the scheduled course sections or at various sections throughout the week is required. A planned schedule will need to be established with the course head.

  • Chinese: BA, BB, BX, 120A, 120B, 123XB, 130A, 130B, 130XA, and 130XB
  • German: 10A, 10B, 10AB, 20A, 20B, 20AB
  • Japanese: BA, BB, 120A, 120B, 130A, 130B, 140A and 140B
  • Korean: BA, BB, BX, 120A, 120B, 123XB, 130A, 130B, 130XA, and 130XB

*A waiver on the restriction to simultaneous enrollment is only made for the discussion sections. As stated above, set attendance, either during one of the scheduled course sections or at various sections throughout the week, is still required. A planned schedule will need to be established with the course head.

Spring 2026 – To be announced

2. When a senior can meet degree requirements only by taking the two particular courses in question and will have no other opportunity to enroll in the courses before graduation. In such circumstances, the Administrative Board may approve reasonable accommodations in consultation with the instructors of the courses involved.

It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that there is no overlap in the meeting times of their courses.

Students pursuing simultaneous enrollment in a Gen Ed course and a non-Gen Ed course must attend the Gen Ed course.

Students who wish to petition the Administrative Board for simultaneous enrollment under exception number two should work directly with their Resident Dean.

Faculty may request a waiver for their courses via the following form. This form is for instructors only.
