2024 Anya Bernstein Bassett Awards winners pose with Dean Hoekstra and Dean Claybaugh.

Professorships and Awards

The Office of Undergraduate Education manages the selection process for two sets of undergraduate teaching awards, the Harvard College Professorships and the Roslyn Abramson Awards.

Anya Bernstein Bassett Award

The Anya Bernstein Bassett Award for Excellence in Teaching by Non-Ladder Faculty is designed to highlight the integral role that non-ladder faculty play in the FAS teaching community. This recognition will be conferred annually upon a select number of non-ladder faculty, nominated by their department.

Departments are invited to nominate at least one non-ladder faculty member (including preceptors, lecturers, college fellows, senior preceptors, and senior lecturers) for consideration for a divisional teaching award. In selecting their nominee(s), departments should seek to identify candidates who are broadly competent in all of the following categories, and particularly distinguished in one or more of them:

  • A track record of implementing evidence-based teaching practices
  • An orientation towards pedagogical innovation, including in types of assignments and approaches to teaching
  • A commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive learning environment
  • An ability to provide direct evidence of student learning
  • Exemplary alignment with departmental or programmatic curricular goals

Nominees will submit a portfolio of materials for review by the prize committee.

Harvard College Professors Awards

Each year, between four and six senior faculty in FAS are selected as Harvard College Professors on the basis of their dedication to educating undergraduate students and helping them develop their intellectual passions. Harvard College Professorships are five-year appointments, begun in 1997 through a gift of John and Frances Loeb. They provide faculty with extra support for research or scholarly activities, a semester of paid leave or summer salary.

Roslyn Abramson Award

Two Roslyn Abramson Awards for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching are given out each year to junior faculty in FAS. The award, which includes a monetary prize, was established with a gift from Edward Abramson ’57 in honor of his mother. It is given in recognition of “excellence and sensitivity in teaching undergraduates.” Recipients are chosen on the basis of their ability to communicate with and inspire undergraduates, their accessibility, and their dedication to teaching.
