Advanced Standing

Students who seek admission to Harvard College are advised that the Advanced Standing program changed beginning in Fall 2020. Admitted students who entered the College as freshmen starting in Fall 2020 (the Class of 2024), and all subsequent classes, are not eligible to receive Harvard College degree credit for pre-matriculation credentials earned in secondary school.

This means that Advanced Placement examinations, the International Baccalaureate diploma, and international credentials are no longer recognized for Harvard College credit toward the degree for students who entered the College in Fall 2020 and all subsequent classes. These examinations will continue to serve as valuable placement tools, and certain examinations may still fulfill the College’s language requirement.

Students admitted to the College prior to 2020 who were eligible for Advanced Standing will be allowed to apply for and pursue the fourth-year master’s degree in accordance with the rules for Advanced Standing or may petition to pursue the master’s degree through the Concurrent Program.  Students interested in submitting a petition should write to academicpolicy@fas.harvard.edu. Please include an explanation about your preference to pursue the Concurrent Master's Degree instead of the fourth-year master’s program through Advanced Standing.
