Climate in the Curriculum Retreat

As part of the FAS Climate Initiative, the Office of Undergraduate Education has launched a new pilot program in the summer of 2023 called Climate in the Curriculum: A Summer Retreat Opportunity for FAS Faculty at Woods Hole. This program, funded by the FAS Dean, is a collaboration between the Office of Undergraduate Education and the Divisional Deans of FAS and SEAS.

The program will offer a worry-free, focused and inspiring space (the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution) for faculty to come together for two or three days to explore the potential of developing new climate-focused curricular projects around a compelling theme. Faculty are free to develop a retreat structure that makes the most sense to them, with the intent to provide programming that cultivates reflection, learning, dreaming big, sharpening questions, identifying gaps in expertise and understanding, and imagining what it would take to close those gaps. Each retreat should result in some practical plans to develop new courses or educational opportunities for students. The Office of Undergraduate Education has funds available to potentially help with new course development.

Spearheaded by Professor Jason Beckfield, the inaugural summer retreat will be organized around the theme of environmental justice. A retreat reflection will be available in the early fall, as well as information on other ways for interested faculty to get involved in future retreats.

If you have any questions about the program at this stage, send a note to the Office of Undergraduate Education at oue@fas.harvard.edu.
